China's 3,000-Horsepower Yangwang U9 Xtreme Just Took the World Speed Crown
Yangwang's quad-motor electric hypercar just took the title of world's fastest production car, and BYD says it isn't finished yet.

The fastest-production-car argument has been a European affair for as long as most of us have followed it, settled among a few familiar names. This time the winner is a track-only special from a Chinese brand almost no American has seen in a showroom.
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme sits at the top of BYD's ultra-premium sub-brand, a limited-run, track-focused version of the U9 electric supercar. BYD now calls it the fastest production car in the world. The company gave it a big stand at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where one of its vice presidents said the record run had only been a warm-up for a bigger attempt still to come.
The record that rattled the establishment
According to BYD's announcement, the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h (about 308.4 mph) at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg proving ground in Germany, with professional driver Marc Basseng behind the wheel on September 14, 2025. BYD describes it plainly as the "world's fastest production car," and the figure clears the previous production benchmark of 490.484 km/h set by a petrol-powered rival.
One earlier figure keeps coming up, so it's worth sorting out. Before the certified 496.22 km/h pass, the same platform had reportedly recorded roughly 472 km/h in an earlier high-speed run. When you see "472" and "496" quoted in different places, they aren't two accounts of the same lap. They're two separate runs, and the higher one is what BYD now claims as the record.
Four motors, 1200 volts, and a number that is hard to picture

The Xtreme is built on an upgraded 1200V ultra-high-voltage architecture, a big step over the roughly 800V systems most performance EVs use today. It runs four ultra-high-speed motors, each spinning up to 30,000 rpm, for a combined output BYD quotes as "more than 3000 PS." Some specifics vary by outlet. Per-motor peak power (reported around 555 kW each), a power-to-weight figure near 1,200 PS per tonne, and a curb weight of roughly 2,480 kg circulate widely but are not all stated on BYD's own record page, so treat those as reported rather than officially confirmed here.

Underneath the aero, the hardware leans hard toward the circuit. BYD points to a lithium iron phosphate Blade battery with a 30C discharge rate to feed those motors, track-level semi-slick tires, and a revised version of its DiSus-X active suspension tuned for high-speed stability. Everything here is built around one job, and the spec sheet doesn't pretend otherwise.
Goodwood, and a promise to go faster
At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, BYD kept the story rolling. As reported from the event, BYD vice president Stella Li said the company plans to attempt a run beyond 500 km/h in November, arguing that data from the record pass showed the car still had time and speed left on the table. Whether that attempt lands is not confirmed yet, so for now the 496.22 km/h figure remains the one on the board.

As halo cars go, this one is about as pure as it gets. The U9 Xtreme is capped at 30 units globally, each offered with a bespoke customization program. Reported pricing puts it well past the standard U9: units were reported sold for more than 20 million yuan (roughly 2.7 to 2.9 million US dollars) around the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, which would make it the most expensive vehicle BYD has ever sold. For context, the regular U9 lists closer to the 1.6-to-1.7-million-yuan range.
A word on availability for US readers: this is very much a China-market and global-collector proposition, not something headed to American dealers. Yangwang does not sell here, and with only 30 examples worldwide, the Xtreme says more about how far BYD's engineering can reach than about any car you'll ever pull up next to. The headline is the speed, but the part I keep coming back to is the 1200V platform.
