Rivian Built a Cheaper Adventure SUV — And Somehow Made It a 656-HP Rocket

The R2 is Rivian's make-or-break second act: a mid-size electric SUV that opens under $45,000 and, in Performance trim, still runs to 60 in 3.6 seconds.

Rivian spent its first years building electric adventure machines that earned the reviews and priced out most of the people writing them. The R1T and R1S made the name; the R2 has to make the business. It's a smaller, five-seat SUV built for the volume Rivian's future depends on, and the first Performance examples are already reaching customer driveways.

At 185.9 inches long on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, the R2 sits a size below the three-row R1S, nearly six inches shorter between the wheels. That's the whole point. It's easier to thread through traffic and cheaper to build than the R1S, and you can actually park it. It keeps the upright Rivian shape and the oval headlights, and the off-road hardware carries over too: 9.6 inches of ground clearance and 32-inch tires on every wheel option.

Three trims, in reverse order of price

Rivian is rolling the lineup out backwards. The loaded Performance arrives first; the affordable Standard that most people are actually waiting for comes last.

Trim Power Headline figure
R2 PerformanceDual-motor AWD · $57,990 · now 656 hp · 609 lb-ft 0–60 in 3.6 s
R2 PremiumDual-motor AWD · $53,990 · late 2026 450 hp · 537 lb-ft 0–60 in 4.6 s
R2 StandardSingle-motor RWD · $44,990 · 2027 350 hp · 355 lb-ft 0–60 in 5.9 s

Range is where the caution flags go up: Rivian quotes up to roughly 330 miles on the Long Range dual-motor cars and about 275 on the Standard battery, but those are the company's own preliminary EPA-cycle estimates, not finalized EPA numbers. Charging runs through a NACS port with access to 21,000-plus Tesla Superchargers, and Rivian claims 10–80% in under 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. Towing tops out at 4,400 lbs, payload at 1,168 lbs on the dual-motor cars.

The Performance is the halo: semi-active suspension, the full spread of Rally, Snow and Soft Sand drive modes, and a Launch Package thrown in for early buyers. The Premium keeps the same dual-motor bones but trades some output for the nicest cabin: wood accents, heated and ventilated seats, Matrix LED headlights, the pop-out Rivian Torch flashlight. The Standard is the one that decides the balance sheet: a single rear motor, rear-wheel drive, the lowest price by a wide margin, with a Long Range battery or dual-motor AWD available to add later.

Room, and tech that keeps updating

Inside, the R2 spends its money on packaging: 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, a 40/20/40-folding rear seat that swallows skis or lumber without evicting passengers, and north of 40 inches of both headroom and legroom in back. It's a small SUV engineered to wear like a bigger one.

The tech pitch is the familiar Rivian one: a car meant to improve after you buy it. There's an in-house processor Rivian rates at 200 trillion operations per second, the AI-powered Rivian Assistant, and Universal Hands-Free assisted driving mapped across 3.5 million miles of US and Canadian roads, with lane-change-on-command on divided highways. Over-the-air updates are meant to keep adding to it over time.

Editor's take

The R2 is the most important vehicle Rivian has ever shipped, and on paper it lands. Leading with the $57,990 Performance is a margin play, getting the profitable cars out first, but the figure that decides Rivian's future is the $44,990 Standard due in 2027. That's the price separating a mainstream brand from a well-loved boutique. Two honest caveats: the range numbers are still preliminary, and the cheap trim is more than a year out. Even so, a 656-hp electric SUV that stays nimble on a back road and still works off the pavement, with a clever interior on top, is a product you can actually buy, which is more than most concept-car promises can say.

Build it your way.

The R2 ships on 19-, 20-, and 21-inch wheels depending on trim, which is a solid starting point. If the factory look isn't yours, Forza Performance Group can build a custom forged set matched to your exact R2, sized and finished to fit whether you're running the all-season setup or the all-terrain package. On an EV this heavy, load rating and brake clearance aren't cosmetic details. They decide whether the fitment actually works.
