The Electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: Tri-Motor, 1,153 HP

The four-door AMG GT is back for a second act, and it has quietly dropped its V8 for three electric motors and a headline number north of 1,100 horsepower.

Mercedes-AMG pulled the covers off the second-generation GT 4-Door Coupe on May 20, 2026, and what sits under the skin is completely new. The four-door is fully electric now, with no combustion version on the menu at all. Tuned to its limit, it claims 1,153 horsepower from three motors. The old twin-turbo V8 never got anywhere near that, and the figure drops this four-door squarely into supercar company.

If you follow the show circuit, the car is turning its first public dynamic laps at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July, running the hillclimb in front of a crowd instead of sitting on a stand. That is the news peg most Americans will catch first, even though the formal reveal happened back in May.

Out with the V8, in with the current

The outgoing GT 4-Door (chassis code X290) was a hand-built V8 and, later, a plug-in hybrid. This one shares none of that. It rides on AMG's new dedicated electric architecture, AMG.EA, and the whole business of making power has been rethought from scratch. For a badge built on the sound and shove of a hot-vee V8, going all-electric on the four-door takes some nerve.

Three motors, and why they spin sideways

The powertrain uses three axial-flux electric motors developed by YASA, the specialist Mercedes now owns. Axial-flux designs run their magnetic field along the axis of rotation rather than across it, which lets them cram a lot of output into a thin, light package. Two sit on the rear axle and a third works as a front "booster," so the car goes all-wheel drive when it needs the traction.

The split between the two versions comes down to how hard those motors are allowed to work. The GT 55 makes a peak 805 hp (816 PS / 600 kW) and 1,800 Nm of torque. The GT 63 steps up to 1,153 hp (1,169 PS / 860 kW) on Launch Control, with 2,000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) on tap. If you are keeping score in PS, remember that PS and hp are just different units for the same output.

The GT 63's headline power is quoted with Launch Control engaged. Mercedes-AMG lists the GT 63 at 2.1 seconds for 0–100 km/h; separately, Mercedes-Benz USA cites 0–60 mph in 2.0 seconds. Those are two different measurements taken from two different reference points, so we're listing them apart instead of blending them into one number.

106 kWh, 800 volts, and an eleven-minute splash

The motors draw from a 106 kWh (net) battery built on an 800-volt architecture. AMG went with cylindrical cells that are cooled directly, a trick lifted from the way Formula 1 hardware handles heat. That direct cooling earns its keep when you ask a battery to deliver this much power over and over without wilting.

On a quick enough charger the pack accepts up to 600 kW of DC, and AMG quotes a 10–80 percent top-up in roughly 11 minutes. Range lands at up to about 700 km for the GT 55 and around 696 km for the GT 63, call it up to roughly 430 miles. One caveat worth flagging: those figures come from the European WLTP cycle, which reads optimistically next to the EPA testing used in the States. The US EPA numbers, once they exist, will be lower.

How quick, how fast, how big

The GT 63 covers 0–100 km/h in 2.1 seconds and the GT 55 does it in 2.8. Top speed is capped electronically at 300 km/h (186 mph) once you add the optional package that unlocks it. On size, the four-door is reported to measure roughly 5,094 mm long, 1,959 mm wide and 1,411 mm tall on a 3,040 mm wheelbase, tipping the scales near 2.46 tonnes. Those dimensions trace to a single source for now, so treat them as reported until AMG publishes the full data sheet.

When you can actually buy one

Production runs at Mercedes' Sindelfingen plant, with build starting in the summer of 2026, while the axial-flux motors are made in Berlin-Marienfelde. For US buyers the rollout is staggered: the GT 55 is slated to arrive later in 2026, and the GT 63 follows in early 2027.

US pricing has not been announced. In Germany the range opens at €154,700 for the GT 55 and €196,350 for the GT 63. Those are European figures and do not convert cleanly into a US window sticker, so read them as a rough sense of where the car sits, not a forecast for American pricing.

Editor's take

Retiring the V8 from a car that wears the AMG GT name is going to sting for a certain kind of buyer, and pretending otherwise would be silly. But the numbers are hard to argue with. A four-door that runs to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds and still claws back 70 percent of its battery in about the time it takes to grab a coffee is doing things the old car physically could not. The open question is character. Raw output was never AMG's weak spot; the harder trick is making an electric sedan feel like an event, the way that hot-vee V8 did, and Goodwood's hill is a fair place to start proving it.
