Rivian R2
Having made a significant impact with its R1S and R1T models on American roads, Rivian is now directing its attention toward a new SUV named R2.
Forza Performance Group has already begun production of forged wheels with designs from forthcoming Rivian models. Order yours now: R2 and R3.
This smaller and more affordable model is positioned to broaden its appeal. Comparable in size to compact crossovers like the BMW X3 and the Hyundai Tucson, the R2 enters the market with a $45,000 starting price and an electric powertrain, placing it in the same category as the Ford Mustang Mach E and the Tesla Model Y. The R2 offers a choice of single, dual, or tri-motor powertrain configurations and can be equipped with two different battery sizes. The largest battery, combined with the single-motor powertrain, is estimated to provide a range exceeding 300 miles.
The interior of the R2 follows the design principles of Rivian's larger models, featuring the same 15.6-inch center infotainment display. With two rows of seats accommodating up to five passengers, the SUV boasts a spacious rear cargo area and a frunk for additional storage. Rivian anticipates commencing R2 deliveries in the first half of 2026.
The R2 presents three distinct electric powertrain options. The base model is a single-motor configuration, powering the rear wheels, while dual- and tri-motor models provide all-wheel drive. The top-tier tri-motor setup includes two motors on the rear axle and one on the front. Although horsepower ratings are currently undisclosed, the R2's performance, including acceleration figures, remains to be tested closer to its on-sale date.
Rivian projects that the tri-motor R2 will achieve a 0-60 mph time of under 3.0 seconds. As testing opportunities arise, the story will be updated with driving impressions and results. The R2 is equipped with two battery options, presumably a Standard Battery and Large Battery, mirroring the R1 models. Rivian suggests the potential introduction of a Max Battery in the future to extend the range further. The longest-range R2, featuring the single-motor variant with the Large pack, is estimated to exceed 300 miles.
While specifications for the R2's charging system are pending, Rivian estimates a rapid charging capability of 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. Inside the cabin, the R2 provides two rows of seats for five occupants, along with a generously sized cargo area behind the second row. The interior incorporates more cubby storage than the R1S, including a second glovebox. Maintaining the rugged-yet-luxurious theme of the R1 models, the R2's controls are predominantly accessed through the large infotainment display at the dashboard center. In line with its adventurous persona, Rivian offers an optional rooftop tent called the Rivian Treehouse, featuring a heated mattress, lighting system, and a screen for content streaming. Additional accessories include a bike rack and a compact travel kitchen.
